Collision Checklist
- Gather Documentation
One of the first steps in successfully settling an insurance claim is starting a paper trail. Gather, at minimum, the following information.
From each driver involved:
- name
- address
- insurance information
- driver's license number
For each vehicle involved:
- make
- model
- color
- license plate number
- Vehicle Identification Number (if possible)
- File a Report
Next, file an accident report with the Department of Public Safety.
- Contact Insurance
Then contact the responsible party’s insurance company. Also get in touch with your own agent even if the accident wasn’t your fault. (Your own agent can offer helpful advice about getting the claim settled.)
• Take good notes
When speaking with insurance representatives (especially if you get the sense things aren’t proceeding quickly), take note of and record:
- The date and time of all phone conversations.
- The names of anyone you speak to.
- Any topics of discussion.
(Tip) If the other person’s insurance company isn’t responding to your calls, put your claim in writing and send it by certified mail. (This lets them know you are documenting your transactions, and they will take you more seriously.)
• Know Your Rights
Remember, you get to choose where to have your car fixed — it isn’t up to the party paying the claim.
And finally, know your rights — contact the Texas Department of Insurance at 800-252-3439 or through their website: www.tdi.state.tx.us. Complaint resolution specialists there can contact the insurance company — and in most cases that’s enough to get your claim handled promptly.
